Joby Aviation has received a Special Airworthiness Certificate for the first aircraft built at its Pilot Production Line in Marina, California, allowing flight testing to begin. The aircraft is expected to become the first ever electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to be delivered to a customer. Joby plans to begin commercial passenger operations in 2025 and recently partnered with Delta Air Lines to provide emissions-free travel.
United Airlines and Archer Aviation plan to launch a flying taxi service in Chicago in 2025, using Archer's electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to transport passengers between O'Hare International Airport and downtown Vertiport Chicago. The service will be the first air taxi route in the city and aims to offer a more sustainable, convenient, and cost-effective mode of transportation. The eVTOL aircraft will be able to carry up to four passengers at a time, transporting them as far as 100 miles at speeds as fast as 150 miles per hour. The estimated fare for the trip from Vertiport to O'Hare is about $100.
