Moldovan Parliament Resolves Long-Standing Language Dispute.
Moldova's ruling party, PAS, is expected to pass a bill to make Romanian the official language of the country, replacing 'Moldovan', in a move to right a historic wrong inflicted on Moldova under the Soviet Union. The bill has angered pro-Russian parties and is seen as a symbolic expression of the country's European ambitions. Most of Moldova had been annexed by Tsarist Russia in 1812 and was part of the Russian empire until the end of World War One, when it voted to unite with Romania.
