Supreme Court Implements Code of Conduct Amid Ethics Scrutiny
The Supreme Court has adopted a formal code of conduct, signed by all nine justices, after facing scrutiny over its ethics practices. The code includes five canons that emphasize upholding the integrity and independence of the judiciary and avoiding impropriety. However, it remains unclear how the new policy will be enforced. Critics argue that the code leaves much to be desired and lacks an enforcement mechanism, raising concerns about the justices covering for each other. The adoption of the code comes after revelations about travel arrangements and vacations accepted by Justice Clarence Thomas from a GOP donor, as well as other ethical concerns involving justices. The Senate Judiciary Committee had opened an investigation into the court's ethics practices, and Chief Justice John Roberts declined an invitation to testify.
