Steam tubes in LS engines, like the LS1, help remove trapped air from the cooling system due to the engine's unique thermostat placement, ensuring proper cooling and preventing engine damage. These tubes connect the lower thermostat housing to higher ports in the engine block, allowing air to escape and maintaining optimal engine performance.

The Commer Knocker, also known as the TS3, was a unique engine used by British commercial truck manufacturer Commer in the 1950s and '60s. It featured an opposed-piston design with two pistons in each cylinder, and one crankshaft instead of two. The TS3 had a distinctive idle sound and was remarkably powerful for its size, producing up to 117 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. However, production ceased in 1972 when the four-cylinder TS4 replaced it.

Spanish company INNengine has developed a unique 500cc 'one-stroke' engine that defies traditional design, weighing just 85 pounds and producing 120 horsepower. The engine features opposed-pistons and lacks connecting rods, resulting in improved balance and reduced noise and vibration. It utilizes a single-stroke combustion cycle and can be used as a range extender in electric vehicles, offering a lightweight and cost-effective solution for extending their range. While it may not directly power cars, the INNengine has the potential to revolutionize the automotive industry.
