Potential Infection Exposure at Salem Hospital Raises Alarms
Salem Hospital in Massachusetts has notified approximately 450 endoscopy patients that they may have been exposed to infectious diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C. The hospital discovered an isolated practice involving the administration of intravenous medication that was not consistent with best practices. The hospital has corrected the practice, conducted a comprehensive review, and determined that the infection risk to patients is extremely small. Patients have been notified, offered free screening, and provided with necessary support. As of now, there is no evidence of any infections resulting from this incident.
