Boston Takes Action: Clearing the Mass. and Cass Encampment

Boston city workers have begun clearing tents near the intersection of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue as part of a three-day effort to enforce a new encampment ban. Over 75 tents are being taken down, personal items are being placed in storage, and around 90 people are being moved into shelters. Some residents expressed concern and confusion about the sudden clearing, feeling that they were not given enough notice or options. City officials state that the focus is on connecting people with treatment, shelter, or family reunification, and increased enforcement will be rolled out gradually over the next month.

Cities Take Different Approaches to Address Homelessness

The San Diego City Council has passed an unsafe camping ordinance, or homeless encampment ban, with a 5-4 vote. The ban will go into effect 30 days after the first safe sleeping lot is set to open on July 1. Enforcement will consist of a three-step approach, including offering shelter and education, issuing a misdemeanor citation, and making an arrest. The ordinance will prohibit tent encampments in public spaces in the city if shelter beds are available and ban encampments entirely, at all times, regardless of if shelter beds are available, in parks, canyons, near schools, transit stations, and homeless shelters.

San Diego's Homeless Community Opposes Proposed Encampment Ban.

The San Diego City Council is set to vote on a proposed ordinance that would ban homeless encampments from public property, with violators only cited if they refuse available shelter beds. However, some areas would be enforced even if no shelter beds were available due to public safety concerns. Homeless individuals expressed concern about where they would go if the ban were enforced, with some fearing shelters may not accommodate vulnerable people. The proposed ordinance is seen as a way to get people to accept shelter beds as more become available, but critics argue that beds are often not available.
