League of Legends is adding a new Emerald rank between Platinum and Diamond and overhauling its ranked system to make it easier for players to hit high ranks. Promo games are being removed, and placement games are being halved to only five. The changes aim to push players stuck in Silver and Gold into higher ranks while keeping Diamond and above at a fairly low population. Riot devs believe that ranks are "too skewed toward the lower end of the spectrum" and that the changes will more accurately reflect the skill level of individual players within those ranks.
