Eva Kaili placed under house arrest after prison release.

Greek MEP Eva Kaili, who was arrested in December 2020 for her alleged involvement in a cash-for-favours scheme, has been released from prison and placed under house arrest with an electronic bracelet. Kaili was charged with participation in a criminal organisation, corruption and money laundering. Her arrest sent shockwaves across Brussels and brought to light an investigation into a cash-for-favours scheme that involved "large" sums of money and "substantial" gifts allegedly paid out by Qatar and Morocco in order to influence European policy-making.

"Escape and Hiding: The Russian Experience"

Russian opposition politicians, activists, and ordinary citizens have been escaping house arrest by exploiting weaknesses in the system. Detainees fitted with electronic bracelets, which trigger a police alarm if removed or if the accused leave home, have been able to flee by timing their escape, taking secondary roads, switching drivers often, and abandoning their phones. Many detainees get help from underground Russian groups and external rights groups with experience providing routes, reliable drivers, visas, money, and safe houses. Most cross at official border points and remove their electronic bracelets after leaving Russia.
