Joby Aviation has received regulatory approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct flight testing of its electric flying taxis. The California-based company plans to deliver two aircraft to the US Air Force in 2024 and aims to launch commercial passenger services in 2025. Joby has partnered with Delta Airlines for passenger transportation, and Toyota has invested $400 million in the development of its eVTOL aircraft. France is also preparing for electric air taxis to be used during the 2024 Summer Olympics, with Volocopter seeking regulatory approval to become the supplier for the event.

The Paris region is planning for a small fleet of electric flying taxis to operate on multiple routes when it hosts the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games next summer. Volocopter of Germany could be the first to fly taxis commercially if European regulators give their OK. The limited power of battery technology restricts the range and number of paying passengers they can carry, so eVTOL hops are likely to be short and not cheap at the outset. Manufacturers of eVTOLs aim in the coming decade to unfurl fleets in cities and on more niche routes for luxury passengers.
