Congo Election: Protests, Fraud Allegations, and Uncertainty Surround Presidential Race
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) held presidential and legislative elections marred by allegations of fraud, electoral violence, and logistical setbacks. Delays were reported in several towns, voting materials had not arrived at polling stations, and voter lists were not published. Opposition candidate Martin Fayulu warned that if all people don't vote in all polling stations indicated by the national election commission, they won't accept the results. The election commission has insisted on delivering a free and fair vote, but independent observers and critics have flagged irregularities. President Felix Tshisekedi is competing against 18 opposition challengers, and the final results are expected by December 31.
