Guinness World Records has named Pepper X as the new hottest pepper in the world, surpassing the previous record held by the Carolina Reaper. Developed by pepper expert Ed Currie, Pepper X has an average rating of 2,693,000 Scoville Heat Units, compared to the Carolina Reaper's 1.64 million. Currie crossbred and cultivated Pepper X over a decade, focusing on increasing its capsaicin content and flavor. The pepper is currently only available in hot sauce form, as the pods and seeds are not being sold. Currie is already working on his next potential record-breaking pepper.
