U.S. Navy Investigates Cause of R/V Petrel Dry Dock Incident.

The US Navy is investigating the incident where the R/V Petrel, a service-owned research vessel, toppled over while in dry dock in Scotland, injuring at least 33 people. The ship was purchased by the Navy in September 2022 for $12.4 million and was undergoing maintenance and inspections when the incident occurred. The ship was previously owned by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and was used in several shipwreck research missions. The Navy has not disclosed its mission for the ship, but it is expected to serve a similar role as the UK's RFA Proteus in inspecting and surveying undersea infrastructure.
