The DEA's Northeast Laboratory has reported that approximately 15% of drug exhibits analyzed contain a mixture of xylazine. The substance is cheaper and more available than fentanyl, making it an attractive choice for suppliers. The DEA is targeting cartels, particularly the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels working in conjunction with China, as the main culprits behind the fentanyl and xylazine crisis. Senator Chuck Schumer is leading efforts to combat the issue through legislation and sanctions on countries like China and Mexico. The Biden-Harris Administration has declared xylazine combined with fentanyl as an emerging threat and has taken steps to disrupt the fentanyl supply chain.
