Regulators Demand Tesla Disclose Data on 'Elon Mode' Autopilot
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a special order to Tesla, demanding extensive data on its driver assistance and monitoring systems, including the previously undisclosed "Elon mode" configuration. This configuration allows drivers to use Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems without the usual prompts to engage the steering wheel. NHTSA is concerned about the safety implications of this feature and has requested information on how many cars and drivers have been authorized to use it. Tesla has been given until August 25 to provide the requested information. The company's response has been granted confidential treatment. NHTSA is also investigating several crashes involving Tesla vehicles and their Autopilot systems.
