Dr. Joshua Gordon, the current director of the National Institute of Mental Health, has announced his decision to step down from his position on June 14, 2024, after serving for 8 years.
Dr. Joshua Gordon, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), is departing to take on a new role at Columbia University. During his tenure, Dr. Gordon oversaw significant advancements in mental health research, including suicide prevention, neural circuit research, and computational psychiatry. Under his leadership, NIMH made substantial contributions to mental health practice and services, such as new medications, telemedicine, and partnerships for early interventions in schizophrenia. While a replacement is sought, Shelli Avenevoli, the current NIMH Deputy Director, will serve as Acting Director.
