Downtown Pittsburgh has seen a significant recovery in visitor numbers, with 1.7 million visitors in July, representing a 97% recovery rate from pre-pandemic levels. The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership (PDP) reported that overall recovery, including office workers and residents, reached 81% compared to pre-pandemic levels. The rebound has been led by cultural amenities and events, with local tourism rates increasing by 116% and out-of-state tourism almost back to pre-pandemic levels. However, office worker recovery is still lagging, with only 63% of weekday workers returning to Downtown. Business leaders and city officials are in conflict over how to manage the recovery, with business leaders emphasizing public safety as a key factor in bringing workers back.

The county claims to have found an alternative space for those in need, but some fear that many will return to living on the streets or in tents. The closure comes after months of complaints from downtown business owners and people who work in the area. Some have said they don't feel safe and others have said the area is unsanitary. Council Member Bethany Hallam believes that more can and should be done to fight homelessness and that there is money to solve the problem.
The last McDonald's in Downtown Pittsburgh, located on Stanwix Street, will be closing by the end of April after McDonald's decided not to extend its lease in the building. The building owner believes that business may have been down due to a lack of traffic downtown during the pandemic.
