Reeves, accusing them of making more than 7.5 billion robocalls to people on the national Do Not Call Registry. The lawsuit alleges that Avid Telecom used spoofed or invalid caller ID numbers, including more than 8.4 million calls that appeared to be coming from government and law enforcement agencies as well as private companies. The company also allegedly sent or transmitted scam calls about the Social Security Administration, Medicare, Amazon and DirecTV, as well as auto warranties, employment and credit card interest rate reductions.

The lawsuit is part of the nationwide Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force of 51 attorneys general and the District of Columbia.

A bipartisan coalition of 49 state attorneys general sued Avid Telecom, alleging that the company is responsible for billions of illegal robocalls, including calls to phone numbers on the Do Not Call Registry. The state AGs claim that many of the calls impersonated law enforcement and government agencies, while others purported to be from large corporations like Amazon or DirecTV to lure call recipients into scams. Avid Telecom denies the allegations and says it operates in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

FCC mandates cellphone companies to block scam texts.

The FCC has made its first rule to block scam robotexts official, requiring carriers to block messages that are likely to be illegal and closing a loophole that allows scammers to dodge Do-Not-Call Registry protections. The rule targets text messages from numbers that are unlikely to transmit text messages and hopes to close the lead generator loophole. While these kinds of robotexts already fall under the Telephone Consumer Protection act, the new rules will give carriers more tools to help them actively block scammers.
