Rapid urban expansion into flood-prone areas heightens water disaster risk
A study published in the journal Nature reveals that the number of settlements in high flood zones has increased by 122% since 1985, compared to an 80% increase in the safest areas. The problem is particularly prevalent in middle- and low-income countries, where people are forced to settle in flood-prone areas due to affordability. China, Vietnam, Libya, and Pakistan have seen significant growth in settlement extent in the worst flood zones. The study highlights the need for smart urban planning to prevent further population growth in high-risk areas and emphasizes the importance of addressing climate change, as the two issues are interconnected.
