Historic WWII Tugboat Makes Triumphant Return to DeLand

A World War II tugboat, the ST 479 "the Tiger," originally built in DeLand in the 1940s, has returned to Florida after being towed from Sweden. The boat, used during the Normandy invasion, is the only U.S. Army ST tugboat to return to its place of origin. The president of DeLand Historic Trust Inc. aims to make it a national monument, as it holds historical significance. The boat's original engine and superstructure are still intact. The plan is to keep the boat in Lake Beresford until a permanent monument can be established, and the project organizers are seeking support from Volusia County.

Historic World War II Tugboat Comes Home to Central Florida

The ST-479 Tiger, a historic tugboat built in DeLand in 1944 and used in World War II, has returned to Volusia County after being in Europe for 79 years. The boat, which likely participated in the Normandy invasion, was brought back to the United States thanks to a generous donation. After a minor setback of getting stuck in the mud earlier this year, the tugboat has finally made its way back to its birthplace. Plans are underway to preserve the boat and potentially turn it into a memorial for the builders and crews of all U.S. Army STs of World War II.
