The Entire 'Whole Earth Catalog' Now Available Online

The nearly complete archive of the Whole Earth Catalog, a magazine that played a significant role in popularizing tech and internet culture, has been digitized and made available online. The collection includes issues of the original magazine as well as the Whole Earth Software Review, which focused on the emerging computer culture. The project was directed by the Gray Collective and supported by the Long Now Foundation and the Internet Archive. The archive can be accessed in PDF form on the Internet Archive's website.

The Internet's Evolution on Screen.

From The X-Files to Halt and Catch Fire, the internet has been a popular theme in film and TV. Early depictions of the internet were characterized by cables and modems, and going online was a deliberate decision. The Lone Gunmen from The X-Files made hacking and conspiracy theories cool, while Halt and Catch Fire portrayed the fear of being shunted offline. Today, cables are unsightly and outdated, and the internet is largely considered a modern utility. While there are still great films and shows about the internet, normcore television offers a nostalgic look at the technology of the past.
