Bank of America Hit with $250M Fine for Fake Accounts and Junk Fees

Bank of America has been ordered to pay $250 million in fines and customer compensation for deceptive practices, including withholding credit card rewards, illegally double-dipping on fees, and opening accounts without consent. The penalties also include a $10 million civil penalty for unlawful garnishments and $225 million in fines for mishandling state unemployment benefit disbursements. This is one of the highest financial penalties in years against the bank, which had previously been ordered to pay $727 million in redress for illegal credit card practices in 2014.
