"The Met's Powerful Opera Sheds Light on Abducted Ukrainian Children"
The Metropolitan Opera has commissioned a new opera about Russia's abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children, aiming to support Ukraine culturally in its fight for freedom. The opera, written by Ukrainian composer Maxim Kolomiiets and American playwright George Brant, tells the story of a mother's journey to rescue her daughter from a camp in Crimea. Based on real-life accounts, the opera aims to shed light on the suffering of mothers protecting their children and draw attention to similar situations worldwide. The Met has been actively supporting Ukraine, including creating the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra and staging concerts in support of the country. The opera is expected to debut by 2027 or 2028.
