Michigan State University trustees have approved a nearly 7% increase in room and board rates for incoming freshmen this fall, citing a 25% increase in food costs and inflationary impacts on housing expenses. The increase means the basic residence hall rate for a double room for first-year undergraduate students who select the silver unlimited meal plan would be set at $11,754, up from $10,990. The university is working to minimize expenses in ways that include purchasing food in larger quantities, reducing the use of disposable items in dining halls, trimming some labor costs, and reducing staff overtime.
