New study links toxic chemicals to wigs and braids marketed to Black women
A Silent Spring Institute study of 43 hair-extension products found 169 chemicals, including flame retardants, pesticides and organotin stabilizers; 12 are Prop 65 listed and 17 are linked to breast cancer, signaling potential dermal and inhalation exposure for wearers and stylists and prompting calls for stronger FDA oversight and labeling, with only a couple of products deemed non-toxic.
