"Chicago Man's Heroics Inspire Donation of 2,000 Narcan Doses to Combat Opioid Epidemic in Cook County"
Matthew McFarland, a recovering addict who estimates he's saved 50 people from overdoses, has donated 2,000 naloxone devices to the Cook County Sheriff's Office after a pharmaceutical company saw him revive a man on the news. McFarland, who always carries naloxone, wanted to ensure wider distribution of the life-saving drug, which helps reverse opioid overdoses. The donation comes as Cook County recorded 2,000 overdose deaths last year. McFarland chose the sheriff's office because a deputy had saved his life with naloxone eight years ago.
