Disney writes off $1.5 billion in content after removing titles from streaming services.

Disney will take a $1.5 billion impairment charge in its June quarter financial statements due to the removal of "certain produced content" from its streaming services. The company expects to remove additional content and may incur further impairment charges of up to $400 million. Last week, Disney removed over 50 titles from Disney+ and Hulu as part of its plan to rationalize content and raise the price of Disney+ without ads later this year. The company also plans to launch an integrated Disney+/Hulu "one-app experience" in the U.S. by the end of 2023.

Disney+ and Hulu Purge Content: What's Next?

Disney+ has removed a dozen original movies from its platform in a historic content purge to avoid residual fees and other expenses. The movies removed include Artemis Fowl, Black Beauty, Cheaper by the Dozen (2022), Flora & Ulysses, Stargirl, Magic Camp, The One And Only Ivan, and more. This move is part of Disney's cost-saving strategy to recoup major losses financially from the past couple of years. Fans are concerned that some of these projects could be lost forever due to this purge.
