NY AG and Lt. Gov. call for redrawn congressional district maps.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Kathy Hochul filed an amicus brief challenging the current congressional map drawn by a court-appointed special master last year, arguing that the 10-member Independent Redistricting Commission has significant time to generate new maps and follow the process outlined in the state Constitution to create congressional maps going forward. The bipartisan commission is tasked with creating new state Assembly, Senate and U.S. congressional district lines once each decade following the U.S. census. The Legislature rejected the commission's maps following the 2020 census.
