Democrats caution against Big Tech's potential evasion of competition policies through new trade rules.
A group of Democratic lawmakers have warned that the tech industry's push for new international data rules in trade negotiations over an Indo-Pacific framework could limit US regulators' ability to regulate some of the country's largest companies. The lawmakers argue that the rules could allow personal information to be sent anywhere, instead of being locked securely in the US, and could conflict with President Biden's whole-of-government effort to promote competition. The tech industry's proposed rules could also limit the ability to regulate artificial intelligence and the transfer of sensitive personal data, the lawmakers warned.
