Maui Wildfire Victims' Families Eligible for $1.5 Million Payout
Families who lost loved ones in Hawaii's deadliest wildfire could receive up to $1.5 million each from a victims' compensation fund if they agree not to pursue litigation, as announced by Gov. Josh Green. The fund, now at $175 million, will open to applicants on March 1 and is voluntary, available only to those who agree not to sue the fund's participants. The lack of stable housing for displaced residents has been a major source of anxiety, with efforts underway to provide long-term housing and mental health counseling. Additionally, a preliminary after-action report by the Maui County Police Department made 32 recommendations for improvement in response to the fire.
