Boeing paid outgoing CEO David Calhoun $32.8 million in total compensation for 2023, with a significant portion coming from stock awards, despite a 27.3% stock decline and increased regulatory scrutiny following a plane incident. Former commercial Airlines division CEO Stanley A Deal also saw a rise in compensation. Elon Musk reacted to Calhoun's pay with surprise, possibly due to Boeing's involvement in spacecraft manufacturing, which competes with Musk's SpaceX.
Boeing has decided not to showcase any commercial airplanes at the Singapore Airshow due to an ongoing safety investigation following an incident with one of its passenger planes. However, the company will still be present at the event, displaying its military fighters and inviting visitors to view a cabin display of its widebody 777X. Meanwhile, China's C919 passenger airplane, aimed at competing with Boeing and Airbus, will make its debut at the airshow, representing Beijing's Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
Airbus plans to deliver 800 planes this year, including its A320neo, strengthening its position as the largest plane maker and pulling further ahead of Boeing, which is still dealing with the fallout from the 737 Max safety crisis. Airbus also reported a record 2,094 commercial aircraft orders and a backlog of 8,598 planes at the end of 2023. The company has started work on a more fuel-efficient successor to the A320neo, aiming to launch it in the mid-to-late 2030s, putting Airbus ahead of Boeing in cutting-edge technology aircraft.
