The Colorado Rapids have removed a player from all team activities amid an investigation into his alleged involvement in "unlawful sports gambling." Reports have identified the player as forward Max Alves, who allegedly received $12,000 for getting a yellow card in a match last year against the LA Galaxy. MLS has promised to investigate the matter promptly and has also identified former player Zeca as allegedly involved. This is not the first time MLS has dealt with a player allegedly involved in gambling.

Colorado Rapids' Max Alves Suspended in Connection to Brazilian Match-Fixing Scheme

Colorado Rapids winger Max Alves has been suspended by the club in connection with alleged unlawful sports gambling. Brazilian state prosecutors have charged 16 people, including seven professional soccer players, with alleged match-fixing and illegal betting in what threatens to be one of the largest scandals since Brazil legalized sports gambling in 2018. The alleged offenses took place in 13 matches in Series A and B of the Brazilian Championship, including eight played in 2022. The group would offer up to 500,000 reais ($100,000) as an upfront payment to the players from clubs such as Santos, Juventude, Cuiaba, Cruzeiro, Athletico Paranaense, Internacional and Fluminense, the prosecutors alleged.
