Bologna's Leaning Tower on High Alert for Collapse
Bologna's Garisenda Tower, a medieval landmark that leans as much as the famous tower in Pisa, has been sealed off due to high risk of collapse. Construction has begun on a barrier to contain potential debris in case of a fall. The tower, mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy, has experienced shifts in its tilt, and further inspections revealed deterioration in its base. The barrier is expected to be completed next year, and the tower and plaza will likely remain closed for restoration work for several years. Bologna authorities estimate the barrier alone will cost €4.3m and have launched a crowdfunding campaign for restoration.
