"Unionized YouTube and YouTube Music Workers Laid Off Amid City Council Appeals"

During a live address to the Austin City Council, a YouTube contractor was interrupted with the news that his 43-person team had been laid off, sparking allegations of retaliation for unionizing. YouTube and Google contractors make history with landslide union votes.

Contracted YouTube workers in Austin, Texas, voted to ratify a bargaining unit with the Alphabet Workers Union, creating a union to bargain with Google and its contractor, Cognizant, together as joint employers. The unionization vote passed 41-0, and Google and Cognizant have until May 3 to file an objection to the election. The National Labor Relations Board is investigating an unfair labor practice complaint by AWU, which contends that Cognizant and Google illegally interfered with the union’s formation. If the board agrees with its regional director’s stance and the election is certified May 3, Google and Cognizant will be forced to the bargaining table for the first time in the tech behemoth’s history.
