Former Uvalde mayor Cody Smith triumphs in mayoral race overshadowed by Robb Elementary shooting
Cody Smith, a former mayor and senior vice president at First State Bank of Uvalde, has been elected as the next mayor of Uvalde, Texas. Smith, who previously served on the city council and was first elected mayor in 2008, will fill the remaining year of Don McLaughlin's term as he runs for the Texas House of Representatives. The election took place in the shadow of the Robb Elementary School shooting, with Kimberly Mata-Rubio, the mother of one of the victims, running against Smith. Despite her loss, Mata-Rubio expressed gratitude for the support and is considering another campaign in 2024. The community hopes that the new mayor will help heal the community and address the issues surrounding the law enforcement response to the shooting.
