Swiss Grandmother Sues Bern Over 'Climate Lockdown'
More than 2,000 elderly women, including 85-year-old Marie-Eve Volkoff, are suing the Swiss government in the first ever climate case before the European Court of Human Rights. The women claim that the Swiss government's insufficient policies on climate change have violated their human rights, citing the impact of heatwaves on their health and quality of life. The case could result in an emissions cut order that goes beyond the 2015 Paris Agreement commitments, setting an important precedent. Switzerland's policies to date are deemed "insufficient" by Climate Action Tracker, a website which monitors states' action on global warming.
