Cobblestone Drama at Dwars Door Vlaanderen Ahead of Tour of Flanders

Dylan van Baarle will not be part of Jumbo-Visma's squad for the Tour of Flanders due to illness, which may have stemmed from the after-effects of a crash at the E3 Saxo Classic last week. Van Baarle would have been a key lieutenant for Wout van Aert at Sunday's race as well as a contender in his own right. Jumbo-Visma's line-up for the Tour of Flanders includes Wout van Aert, Christophe Laporte, Tiesj Benoot, Edoardo Affini, Tosh van der Sande, Nathan Van Hooydonck, and Tim van Dijke.

Belgian cycling legends Eddy Merckx, Johan Museeuw, and Tom Boonen have criticized Wout van Aert's decision to gift his teammate Christophe Laporte victory at the Gent-Wevelgem race. Van Aert let Laporte take the top spot after breaking away with him more than 50 kilometres from the line. Merckx, Boonen, and Museeuw all said they would not have done the same thing, with Boonen arguing that Gent-Wevelgem was a bigger prize to give away than a stage of Paris-Nice. Van Aert justified his decision by saying that Laporte is a good friend and that it would feel strange to sprint against him.
