Mariners and Mets Swap Pitchers in Trade Deal

The Seattle Mariners have traded Chris Flexen and Trevor Gott to the New York Mets in exchange for left-handed reliever Zach Muckenhirn. The Mariners were able to unload Flexen's remaining salary of roughly $4 million, while the Mets will pick up the tab for the remaining $600,000. Muckenhirn, who will report to Triple-A Tacoma, has seen success in Triple-A Syracuse with a 0.88 ERA in 30 2/3 innings. Flexen, who struggled in both the rotation and long relief, may clear waivers and accept an outright assignment to be stretched back out as a starter.

Mets Trade for Mariners Reliever Trevor Gott

The New York Mets have acquired right-handers Trevor Gott and Chris Flexen in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, sending lefty Zach Muckenhirn in return. The Mets' struggling bullpen, ranked 21st in the majors with a 4.26 ERA, has been a contributing factor to their disappointing season. Gott, 30, has a 4.03 ERA in 30 relief appearances this season, while Flexen, 29, returns to the Mets after a stint in the Korean Baseball Organization. Muckenhirn, 28, appeared in just three games for the Mets before being designated for assignment.

Mariners DFA Struggling Pitcher Chris Flexen

The Seattle Mariners have designated right-hander Chris Flexen for assignment, giving them a week to trade him or pass him through waivers. Flexen signed a two-year deal with the Mariners after a successful stint in the KBO in 2020, but his results this season have been poor, with a 7.71 ERA in 42 innings. The Mariners will likely have to swallow some or all of his remaining $4.1 million contract to facilitate a trade, and Flexen can reject an outright assignment while retaining his whole salary.

Mariners' Robbie Ray to undergo season-ending flexor tendon surgery.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Robbie Ray will miss the rest of the season due to a flexor tendon injury that requires surgery. The team has three options to replace him: move Chris Flexen into the rotation permanently, promote a player from the minors, or trade for another rotation piece. The team's pitching depth will be tested early, and the hot names for promotion are prospects Bryce Miller, Emerson Hancock, or Bryan Woo. The trade market is also an option, but it's difficult to see that as an immediate option for the club.

Mariners' Robbie Ray sidelined with left flexor strain.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Robbie Ray has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a Grade 1 left flexor strain. Ray, who signed a five-year, $115 million deal with the team in December 2021, struggled with his fastball command in his first start of the season. Left-handed reliever Gabe Speier has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to take Ray’s place on the active roster. Chris Flexen is expected to fill in for Ray in the rotation. Ray will be shut down from throwing for a minimum of two weeks and then he’ll begin to play catch and build back up.

Guardians dominate Mariners with Steven Kwan's historic performance.

The Seattle Mariners lost to the Cleveland Guardians in a game that was described as "silly" and "a fart game." Mariners pitcher Robbie Ray struggled with his pitches, walking five batters and surrendering three runs in the second inning.
