Tragic Death of Teen at Mississippi Poultry Plant

A 16-year-old boy died while operating equipment at a poultry plant in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The teenager, identified as Duvan Pérez from Guatemala, was a sanitation employee at the Mar-Jac Poultry processing plant. The company expressed condolences and stated that safety is their top priority. Both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division have opened investigations into the incident. Child labor violations in the U.S. have increased by 283% since 2015, according to a recent report.

Popeyes Oakland Shut Down Over Child Labor Complaints.

A Popeyes franchise location in Oakland, California, was closed after two 17-year-old employees filed labor and safety complaints with Cal/OSHA and the California Labor Commissioner’s Office, alleging child labor violations and frequent violence at the restaurant. The complaints describe an unsafe work environment that management and security guards aren’t trained to properly respond to. The employees want Cal/OSHA to ensure Popeyes provides ongoing safety training for all employees, including de-escalation, and has a plan in place for how to respond to violent incidents.

McDonald's Fined for Employing 10-Year-Old Children in Louisville and Cincinnati

The owners of 51 McDonald's restaurants in Kentucky and Indiana, as well as 5 McDonald's in Ohio and 5 in Maryland, have been fined by federal authorities after child labor violations were discovered. The violations involved a total of 305 children employed among three independent McDonald's franchisees, two of which are based in Louisville and the other in Walton, Ky. Most of the incidents related to 14- and 15-year-olds working excessive or unallowable hours under federal law. In one case, two 10-year-olds worked unpaid at a McDonald's in south Louisville, performing tasks such as operating a deep fryer, which is prohibited for workers under 16.
