Illinois law protects child influencers' earnings with mandatory savings

Illinois has become the first state in the US to pass a law ensuring that child social media influencers are compensated for their work. The law, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, requires parents to set aside a percentage of earnings for child influencers featured in monetized online platforms. Child influencers will be entitled to a share of earnings based on their appearances in content generating at least 10 cents per view. The law aims to protect children from exploitation and requires vloggers to maintain records and set aside earnings in a trust account for the child until they turn 18. Other states may consider similar legislation, especially those with a high volume of family vloggers and social media influencers.

Piper Rockelle's Mom Accused of Abuse in $22m Lawsuit.

The mother of YouTube star Piper Rockelle is facing allegations of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse from 11 teen content creators who were featured on her daughter's channel. The plaintiffs allege that they endured physical and emotional injuries from "harassment, molestation, and abuse," and some say they weren't compensated for the use of their likenesses to promote Rockelle's content. The court proceedings will offer a rare glimpse into the lucrative and largely unregulated world of child YouTube stardom. The plaintiffs are each asking for roughly $2 million in damages, totaling at least $22 million, from Smith and her boyfriend, Hunter Hill, who the complaint identifies as the director and editor of Rockelle's YouTube channel.
