AI Model Detects High Risk of Lung Cancer in Non-Smokers Using Old X-Ray
Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can predict the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers using routine chest X-rays. The AI model, trained on 147,497 chest X-rays, was able to identify non-smokers at high risk of developing lung cancer within the next six years. Of the patients flagged as high risk, 2.9% were later diagnosed with lung cancer. This study could help open up new detection opportunities for non-smokers, who currently have limited screening options for lung cancer. However, further clinical trials are needed to determine if high-risk individuals identified by the AI tool would benefit from further tests.
