Make-A-Wish Foundation changes policy for cystic fibrosis patients' wishes.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation has announced that from next year, people with cystic fibrosis will no longer automatically qualify for a wish, as the illness is, for many people, far less of a threat than it once was. The charity will now assess eligibility on a case-by-case basis. The decision reflects the ongoing life-changing advances in cystic fibrosis research and treatment. Drugs called CFTR modulators have become more available, which tackle the protein problem that causes the illness. Life expectancy has been increasing for people with CF, jumping from 38 years a decade ago to 53 years for babies born between 2017 and 2021.
