Apple introduces 'Limit Precise Location' to curb carrier-determined device tracking

Apple is rolling out a new iOS privacy feature called Limit Precise Location that restricts what cellular networks can learn about a device’s location, providing only an approximate area to carriers while leaving exact location data for emergency services, Find My, and apps unaffected. Available on iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and iPad Pro (M5) Wi-Fi+Cellular with iOS 26.3+ and carrier support (Telekom in Germany; EE/BT in the UK; Boost Mobile in the US; AIS and True in Thailand). Activation is via Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Limit Precise Location and may require a restart. Availability depends on carrier support, and the feature follows past FCC fines against U.S. carriers aimed at limiting data collection on customers’ movements.

"Android 15: Enhanced Control Over Location Sharing with Carriers"

Android 15 may introduce a new location privacy feature that allows users to control when their location is shared with cellular networks, potentially blocking non-emergency requests. This feature requires support from the device's radio vendor and may not be available on all devices upgrading to Android 15. While it won't completely hide a user's location from carriers, it provides more control over when location data is shared and could help mitigate attacks from devices that mimic cellular networks.

Quantifying the Energy Consumption of Biological Information Processing

Researchers at Yale University have developed a new tool to estimate the energetic cost of information transfer between cells and molecular components in biological systems. The study confirms the high energy costs associated with this process and suggests that the geometry and physical details of the system play a significant role in determining these costs. The findings could help explain the high cost of information processing observed in experimental studies and provide insights into the design principles of different cell signaling strategies.
