The Optimal Timeframe for Receiving the HPV Vaccine
The HPV vaccine, which protects against high-risk strains of the human papillomavirus that can cause cancer, was previously recommended for people up to age 26. However, the FDA approved the vaccine for individuals up to age 45 in 2018. While the immune response to the vaccine weakens with age and it cannot protect against strains one has already been exposed to, studies have shown that the vaccine is still effective in preventing certain HPV-related cancers and genital warts in older individuals. The decision to get the vaccine should be made through shared clinical decision-making with a healthcare provider, taking into account factors such as previous evidence of HPV, risk of HPV cancer, relationship status, cost, and access to coverage.
