Catarina Macario, one of the U.S. women’s soccer team’s rising stars, has ruled herself out of the World Cup due to a longer-than-expected recovery from a torn knee ligament. Macario was expected to be back on schedule after rehab work in Qatar, but her arrival was delayed to early April. The U.S. team’s World Cup training camp starts June 26 in California, and it’s expected that the World Cup roster will be announced a few days before.

USWNT's Catarina Macario ruled out of Women's World Cup due to ACL injury.

USWNT forward Catarina Macario has announced that she will not recover in time from an ACL injury to play in this summer's Women's World Cup. Although she has returned to training, the end of Lyon's season on Saturday will leave her unable to get competitive minutes before USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski announces his roster for the World Cup by July 10. The absence of Macario is a further blow to the U.S., which is seeking a third successive World Cup title, following forward Mallory Swanson suffering a torn patella tendon last month.
