"81-Year-Old Woman Dies After Surgery to Remove Rare 'Stone Baby' Carried for Over 50 Years"
An 81-year-old woman, Daniela Almeida Vera, died after doctors removed a rare 'stone baby' that had been in her body for over 50 years. The calcified foetus was the result of a rare type of ectopic pregnancy known as a lithopedion, where the foetus dies but cannot be reabsorbed by the mother's body. Daniela, who had been too afraid to seek medical help, underwent surgery to remove the foetus but passed away the following day. Her family suspects she may have carried the 'stone baby' for longer than the estimated 56 years. Tests will now be carried out on the calcified foetus to learn more about it.
