Revolutionary Procedure: Simultaneous Cancer Surgery and Caesarean Birth
Four women in London have undergone a pioneering two-in-one operation combining cancer surgery to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer with a Caesarean birth, in what doctors believe is a first. The simultaneous surgery, performed during the Caesarean delivery, eliminates the need for a separate risk-reducing operation to remove the fallopian tubes and ovaries. While the procedure carries risks such as increased blood loss and early menopause, it offers an alternative to the standard surgery and reduces the waiting time for at-risk women. One patient, who had the surgery due to a BRCA gene variant, expressed no regrets and praised the convenience of having both procedures done at once.
