Blind Women Detecting Breast Cancer with Incredible Accuracy in India

Blind and partially-sighted women in India are conducting breast cancer screenings with incredible accuracy using their amplified sense of touch. Only 1% of women in India undergo mammography due to the high cost and limited number of radiologists. These women, trained in tactile breast examinations, can catch lumps as small as 6-8mm, less than the 10-20mm lumps that many physicians without a visual impairment can find during examinations.

Blind Women Detecting Breast Cancer in India

Blind and visually impaired women in India are being trained as medical tactile examiners (MTEs) to detect early-stage breast cancer through highly sensitive examinations. The MTEs use their heightened sense of touch to detect lumps as small as 6-8mm, compared to the 10-20mm lumps that many physicians without visual impairments can find. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer among women in most Indian states, with the majority of cases diagnosed at stage III or IV, reducing survival rates considerably. The MTEs are trained to work alongside medically trained teams as a first step for accurate routine breast cancer screening examinations, available even in areas with limited access to electricity.
