"Study Links Online Racism to Increased PTSD Symptoms in Black Adolescents"
A study published in JAMA Psychiatry reveals that Black children and teens experiencing online racial discrimination may show symptoms of PTSD, which could be linked to suicidal thoughts. The suicide rate among Black youth has significantly increased, with a 144% rise from 2007 to 2020. The study, which included 525 Black youth, found that those who faced online racism were more likely to report PTSD symptoms. Experts emphasize the need for supportive communities and caution against therapy approaches that might invalidate the experiences of Black children facing racism. Online platforms are urged to create safer environments and reduce hate speech to protect Black teens' mental health.
