Communities come together to gift free 'Little Mermaid' screenings for kids.

Dozens of young Black girls were gifted a free private screening of the new live-action Disney film "The Little Mermaid" at the Broad Theater in New Orleans. The exclusive matinee was completely covered by crowdsourced funds raised by Michelle Seymour and Andrea Fullington. The event aimed to increase representation in Hollywood and inspire little girls to see themselves reflected on the big screen. Each mermaid in attendance received a goodie bag with resources from Project Butterfly New Orleans and the Black Teacher Griot.

Skin color dissatisfaction among Black adolescent girls predicts longitudinal risk for meeting binge eating disorder criteria as well as binge eating disorder symptoms, according to new research published in the journal Body Image. The findings suggest that Black girls are psychologically impacted by the cultural belief that having lighter skin is better.
