"Black Founders Thrive at AfroTech Conference in Silicon Valley Bank"

While some Black techies felt it was in poor taste for the bank to celebrate at the conference, others appreciated the bank's commitment to the community and believed it had the potential to earn trust again from scratch. Many Black founders who had previously banked with SVB have moved on to competing banks.

The Painful Reality of Banking: Losses, Crises, and Radical Thinking.

Silicon Valley Bank's collapse was especially hard for Black founder Isa Watson, who used the bank as her primary bank for all business expenses. Watson noticed that Black startup founders who banked with SVB reacted differently than non-Black founders, as the bank was known to support founders from diverse backgrounds in a big way. Black entrepreneurs typically receive less than 2% of all venture capital dollars each year, according to data from Crunchbase. Watson is emotionally exhausted and unsure whether to return fully to SVB or to diversify her business banking partners moving forward.
